about

Onanmatopoeia is a dog's breakfast of DIY super hits recorded between 1992 and 2001. All sounds by Stephen Flint as a one-man orgy of sound. That's right, a one-man orgy of sound. An Onanmatopoeia.

This album is a celebration of homemade recording in the pre digital age. Punching and edits were a major pain, and comping vocals was, well, pretty much impossible. Every take was high stakes accountability. All of these songs were recorded on 1/2", 8 track tape, with fold downs, bounces, and any other means necessary to squeeze track space. It was all about the song, and while the euphoric joy of collaborating with like minded, talented musicians is sacrificed here, there is something about the purity of experimenting with impunity and the singularity of the result associated with doing it all oneself that makes recordings like these impossible any other way. And yes, the drums are samples, but never programmed. Sue me. I didn't have the space or living arrangement to tolerate a real drum set in 1992, so I had to make do tapping out drum parts on a MIDI keyboard. To me, it's part of the charm.

about

Stephen Flint Rutland, Vermont

Born in the desert of New Mexico, but forged of the great music of the '60's, Stephen Flint brings orchestral sensibilities and a literary sense of irony to catchy melodic pop. His 'Saccharine Holiday' album connects myriad pop idioms to the emotional, spiritual, and intellectual journey of becoming and then being "a grown up." "Misanthropy for Moppets" continues this theme with an all-star cast. ... more
